Mainshaft washer left

This thrust washer contributes to mainshaft end-play.

The -56 will fit all earlier applications. The -79 is used on the 1979 to E1984 bikes.

1984 bikes with the alternator goes back to the -56 part. This website does not cover the 1984 alternator Sportster.




Sportster_Mainshaft

The Iron Sportster mainshaft is a triumph of engineering. The general design has sustained from 1952 to 1984. There were teething problems in the early K-model, but they were all cured by 1957 with the introduction of the Sportster.

The mainshaft thrust washer left is pressed into the clutch gear. It captivates the Torrington bearing.This will set the spacing from the clutch gear dogs to the 2nd gear dogs.
